Phoenix Goes 'Pop' Again!

Summer Concert  - Phoenix Goes 'Pop' Again!

In support of Acorns Children's Hospice

Saturday 15th July 2023, the Octagon, Edgbaston High School for Girls

As you can see from these pictures, our second 'Pop' concert was a very colourful affair, enjoyed by over 250 audience members at the Octagon.

Our programme this year included some new pieces for the choir - Let the River Run by Carly Simon, and arrangements by Roger Emerson of You Raise Me Up and Tears in Heaven, as well as some of our favourites from last summer’s concert, such as Queen’s hits Don’t Stop Me Now and Bohemian Rhapsody and Elton John’s Circle of Life and Can You Feel the Love Tonight?

The different voices were also able to showcase their talents this time, with the Sopranos and Altos singing Abba’s Thank You for the Music, and the Tenors and Basses performing an arrangement by Mark Brymer of Unchained Melody.

We were also joined this year by young soloists, Evie, Billy and Sophie Stait who, with a remarkable display of talent, delighted the audience with a selection of songs from popular musicals including My Fair Lady, Beetlejuice, Wicked, and Hamilton.

Our accompanists for this concert were local musicians, Iain Jackson on keyboards, Paul Carroll on drums, Richard Sames on guitar and Jim Griffiths on bass guitar, whose playing added depth and richness to our performance.  Our thanks go to them for helping to make this another very successful and enjoyable concert, as well as to our usual accompanist, Sara Wilander who supported our rehearsals in the run up to this concert.

This concert was another very successful fundraiser for Acorns Children's Hospice.  Their representative on the evening was Jo Thomas who described the amazing work they do to support children diagnosed with life limiting or life threatening conditions, and their families.  The bucket swing at the end of the concert raised a fantastic £648.78!
