The European Doctors Orchestra’s Sing, Dance and Make Merry proved to be both a musically rich and deeply meaningful evening. The concert opened with a procession as the combined choirs entered to Handel’s Zadok the Priest, immediately creating a sense of ceremony and grandeur. This was followed by a vibrant and dramatic performance of Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances.
After the interval, Martin English, Honorary Consultant Paediatric Oncologist, gave a short talk on the vital work of Birmingham Children’s Hospital, with all proceeds from the concert going to the Hospital’s charity.
The programme concluded with Elgar’s The Music Makers, performed with warmth and conviction by orchestra, chorus, and mezzo-soprano Judith Le Breuilly. Under the assured direction of Jack Lovell-Huckle, with chorus master James Llewelyn Jones, the performers captured the work’s reflective and aspirational spirit. This piece has a historic connection to Birmingham - having premiered there in 1912 in aid of the General Hospital on the very site now occupied by Birmingham Children’s Hospital.
