Andy Knowles - Compere

At our Christmas Cracker Concert in December 2012, we took the opportunity to present Andy with a lapel pin, signifying ten years of service to the Choir. We were glad to be able to acknowledge his loyalty and commitment in compering our events. Andy was delighted with the pin and assured us he would wear it with pride.

Andy has been the regular compere for the Phoenix Singers since 2003 and a familiar face on BBC Midlands Today since 1988, as a sports presenter, reporter and as one of the programmes producers.
Having begun his journalistic career in newspapers, Andy then joined BBC Radio Nottingham in 1980 where he went onto win the prestigious Sony Radio Sports Broadcaster of the Year Award in 1988.

Andy also achieved a "first" in radio broadcasting when he commentated on Torvill and Dean’s gold medal-winning Ice Dance routines at two successive World Figure Skating Championships, in Helsinki and Ottawa. He also commentated on two European Football Cup Finals, four Wembley finals and three Lords cricket finals. .

These days when he's not producing or reporting on Midlands Today, Andy is kept busy in his other role - as the manager and executive producer of the BBC Midlands Sports Awards.
But away from his day-to-day duties, Andy is regularly in demand throughout the Midlands as a concert compere, Master of Ceremonies at Awards presentations and after-dinner speaker. Among the venues he’s appeared at are the ICC, Sutton Town Hall, Crescent Theatre, CBSO Centre, Birmingham Conservatoire also Town Hall Birmingham.
He has also starred as the narrator in “Peter and the Wolf” with the Birmingham Philharmonic Orchestra.
Andy’s first appearance at Birmingham Town Hall was in 2009 compering the Karl Jenkins 'Armed Man' concert organised by Phoenix Singers also involving other choirs, plus a full symphony orchestra.
This memorable concert raised much needed funds for the national charity 'Action for Children'
